Here's an early gold rush soda that I acquired at last weekend's Canyonville bottle show.
Boley & Co of Sacramento California started in business in 1852, right at the height of the California gold rush.
This example of the Boley has not been cleaned and has a lot of chunky whittle to the glass.
BOLEY & Co
SAC CITY CAL
is embossed in a slug plate on the front of the bottle along with the
UNION GLASS WORKS
Philad. A
embossed on the reverse side of the bottle. Along with this great embossing
the base has an intact iron pontil. A really nice example of an early soda bottle blown at the Union Glass Works and sent to the California gold rush country to sell to a thirsty miner.
The above ad was placed in the August 1852 Sacramento Daily Union newspaper. I believe this ad was prior to the embossed bottle from the statement "the bottoms of our bottles are painted Venetian red".
Boy would I love to find a Boley with the bottom painted Venetian red!
Great acquisition ! Congratulations on the new addition to the collection :)
ReplyDeleteA great addition to a gold rush collection. That is the most whittled Boley I have ever seen. The photo's do not even do it justice. Nice pickup Rick! Dale M.
