J.J. Spieker Druggist N.W. cor. 6th & K STS. Sacramento |
J.J. Spieker in a light lime green with an applied top. Sitting next to it is a Kelly's Rheumatic Syrup in a western aqua color.
(I believe the Kelly's is also a Sacramento bottle?) - rs

The Kelly's is from Sacramento, but is much later that most folks realize. John C. Ing, of Ing and Alee, was listed in 1906 as the manager of the Kelly's Rheumatic Syrup Co. In 1907, the year the debuted in it's embossed form, the company was listed as Kelly's Rheumatic Syrup Co, John C. Ing, Proprietor, 1326 J Street. The label, placed on the back of the bottle, reads as follows:

Joseph.J. Spieker showed up in Sacramento in 1875, partnering with Albert C. Tufts in an Apothecary on the N.W. cor 10th & K Sts. By 1879 Spieker had his own Drug Store on the N.W. cor 6th & K Sts. In 1880 the numeric system of address numbering was finally straightened out and Spieker's location became 531 K St. He stayed put until 1890 when he closed the store and became a Manufacturing Druggist at 407 J St. By 1892 he is no longer listed in Sacramento Directories.
ReplyDeleteAn interesting factoid is that in 1877 Tufts and Speiker applied for and were issued CA Trade Mark No 404 for Yerba Santa Cough Balsam .
Wow!
ReplyDeleteLots of very interseting information on the Sacto medicines.

That Speiker is one great looking meddy, thanks for sharing. How many are known ?
ReplyDeleteOffhand I would say a dozen, or so. I have dug 3 myself that were "limish" and plenty of aquas. There are a few gnarly blue aquas that have killer hammer whittle and crooked slobby tops.
